Top 5 Most Dangerous Highways in the United States

The five worst highways in the United States are:

1. U.S. Route 93 in Arizona

U.S. Route 93 is a 200-mile stretch of road that runs from Wickenburg, Arizona to the Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge or the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge that is near the Arizona-Nevada border.  At some points, this road turns into a two-lane road. Drivers typically use this road to travel between Las Vegas and Phoenix.

Most of the fatal crashes that took place on this road occurred in Mohave County, Arizona.  From 2010 to 2016, 70 fatal crashes took place on this road.

2. Oklahoma State Highway 9

Oklahoma’s State Highway 9 is the second most deadly highway in the nation.  This road spans from the east to west of central Oklahoma, from the Arkansas border to the Texas panhandle.  Oklahoma’s State Route 9 is the second longest state highway in Oklahoma and spans 348 miles. The majority of the fatal crashes that occurred on SR-9 happened along Cleveland County, Oklahoma.  From 2010 to 2016, 50 fatal crashes occurred on this road.

3. US Route 160 in Colorado

The part of U.S. Route 160 that runs through Colorado is the third most dangerous road in the country.  This ia a 490-mile highway that begins in New Mexico and ends near the Kansas state border. Most of the fatal crashes on this road occur in La Plata County and on the Wolf Creek Pass, which is a high mountain pass with steep roadways and switchbacks.  From 2010 to 2016, 80 fatal crashes took place on this road.

4. Interstate 5 in California

The part of Interstate 5 that runs through California is the fourth most dangerous highway in America.  Interstate 5 spans nearly 800 miles from Oregon to the San Ysidro Mexican border crossing. This road runs through the cities of Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Ana, and Sacramento.  Major cities that are not directly linked by I-5, but are connected to it, include San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose. I-5 also intersects Interstate 10 in Los Angeles and I-8 by San Diego.  The majority of fatal crashes that occur on this road happen in Los Angeles County. From 2010 to 2016, 680 fatal crashes happened on this road.

5. Interstate 10 in Texas

The portion of I-10 that runs from Anthony, Texas to the border of Louisiana is the fifth most dangerous American highway.  This highway connects the major Texas cities of Houston, San Antonio , and El Paso. The majority of fatal crashes that occur on Interstate 10 happen in Harris County.  From 2010 to 2016, 585 fatal crashes happened on this highway.
