Speeding is Dangerous
Before we discuss Nevada speed laws, we want to explain why the laws are so important. If you are reading this article, you may be asking yourself, “What’s the harm in speeding?” Especially when it seems like everyone on Nevada roadways is going fast. Simply put—speeding is dangerous.
Did you know that speeding increases the risk of crashes and influences the severity of crash injuries? High speeds can be disastrous for the following reasons:
- The faster a vehicle is going, the more distance it needs to stop once the driver applies the brake. This means you have less of a chance of avoiding whatever object or person you are trying to avoid if you are speeding.
- Speed increases the distance a vehicle travels from the time a driver detects an emergency to the time the driver reacts.
- The faster a vehicle is going, the more likely it is that the driver will lose control if they engage in an evasive steering maneuver. For example, steering to avoid a collision.
- Speed influences the impact of a crash. The higher the rate of speed, the more severe the injuries.

Nevada Speed Laws
In addition to being dangerous, speeding is also illegal. That is why there are numerous Nevada speed laws. Below we will provide a few notable Nevada speed laws.
Nevada Revised Statute 484B.600
Nevada Revised Statute (NRS) 484B.600 provides the basic rule for restrictions on speed in Nevada. NRS 484B.600(1) provides as follows:
- It is unlawful for any person to drive or operate a vehicle of any kind or character at:
- A rate of speed greater than is reasonable or proper, having due regard for the traffic, surface, and width of the highway, the weather, and other highway conditions.
- Such a rate of speed as to endanger the life, limb, or property of any person.
- A rate of speed greater than that posted by a public authority for the particular portion of the highway being traversed.
- A rate of speed that results in the injury of another person or of any property.
- In any event, a rate of speed greater than 80 miles per hour.
Nevada Revised Statute 484B.603
NRS 484B.603(1) provides the duty of the driver to decrease speed under certain circumstances. It states, in part, that a driver has the duty to decrease speed when:
- Approaching and crossing an intersection
- Traveling upon any narrow or winding highway
- Approaching and going around a curve
- Special hazards exist or may exist with respect to pedestrians or other traffic, or by reason of weather or other highway conditions
- Approaching a hill crest
Nevada Revised Statute 484B.607
In addition to the above requirements, drivers must also slow down when approaching a traffic incident. NRS 484B.607 provides the duties of drivers when approaching a traffic incident. NRS 484B.607(1) states the following:
- Upon approaching any traffic incident, the driver of the approaching vehicle shall, in the absence of other direction given by a law enforcement officer:
- Decrease the speed of the vehicle to a speed that is reasonable and proper, pursuant to the criteria set forth in subsection 1 of NRS 484B.600;
- Proceed with caution;
- Be prepared to stop; and
- If possible, drive in a lane that is not adjacent to the lane or lanes where the traffic incident is located unless roadway, traffic, weather or other conditions make doing so unsafe or impossible.
Nevada Revised Statute 484B.363
Speeding can be especially dangerous in school zones where children are present. NRS 484B.363 applies to school zones. Pursuant to NRS 484B.363, the speed limit in school zones is either 15 or 25 miles per hour. These speed limits are in effect on school days from half an hour before school begins to half an hour after school ends.
Some areas use flashing yellow lights to indicate when the speed limit is in effect. These lights may be turned off during hours students are actually in class. If so, the speed limit then reverts to that posted for non-school hours.
