New Nevada Driver License Design
Nevada is now issuing a new design for driver licenses and identification cards. But don’t rush out to get a new card just yet. You only need to replace your existing license if it is due for renewal, or you have another change. Other changes can include an address change, name change, or Real ID upgrade. Features of the New Nevada Driver License
The new Nevada driver license will look different from the old design that you are used to seeing. According to the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, the new license has the following features:
- Nevada’s “Battle Born” insignia is featured prominently on the front of the license. The insignia is complemented by the year of Nevada statehood, 1864.
- The card design incorporates two Nevada skylines. The front of the card features the Las Vegas skyline. The back of the card displays Carson City. It also gives an artistic interpretation of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Playa in the Black Rock Desert.
- On Real ID compliant cards, the federal Real ID marker has been changed from a gold circle to the outline of Nevada.
- Cards are marked “LIMITED TERM” just below the Real ID indicator when immigration documents are used for proof of identity.
- Standard cards are marked “NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES.”
- Driver Authorization Cards are marked “NOT VALID FOR ID.”
Security Features of the New Nevada Driver License Design
According to the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, the new license contains top of the line overt and covert security features. The features are embedded throughout the card. Some security features are personalized to the cardholder. The card adheres to all federal security standards. Per the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, the card’s increased security features include the following:
- A laser engraved ghost image repeated from the photograph.
- A laser ablation or etching of the cardholder’s initials and year of birth over the top of the driver photograph.
- The cardholder’s date of birth is restated in larger type with a raised feel.
- The background features a guilloche security design with waves and patterns printed in very fine lines that are not able to be scanned or easily reproduced.
- High resolution, “split fountain” printing in which the background colors fade. The colors fade from blue to green and back to blue across the face of the card.

Major Differences Between the New and Old Nevada Driver Licenses
If you see the new card, take a minute to compare it to the old card. Can you spot the major differences between the new card versus the old card? According to the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, the major differences between the new card and old card include the following:
- The Nevada titling is now at the top left of the card.
- Card type is displayed at the top of the card.
- The validity marker of the card is displayed at the top right of the card.
- Various card design elements have changed.
- Perforation data now matches the initial of the first name, the owner’s height in inches, and the initial of the last name. For example, John Doe 5′- 10″ will be J70D.
- Date of birth is restated on the card, next to the weight of the owner. It is restated with a raised feel for security purposes.
- At the bottom of the portrait, there is an indentation of the owner’s first and last initial and the last two digits of their birth year. For example, John Doe 1970 will be JD70.
New Order of Card Data
The order of card data has also changed. The information is now in the following order, from top to bottom:
- Driver license number
- Date of birth
- Name
- Address
- Driver license class
- Driver license endorsements
- Driver license restrictions
- Issue date
- Expiration date
- Personal biometric data of the owner
- Any indicators of organ donor, veteran status, or other specific markers
TSA Update
A problem was reported with the new Nevada driver license. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at United States airports reportedly had issues reading the new license with a barcode scanner. However, the issue is reportedly resolved in most of the United States.
